A relative of mine is interested in moving to Houston. She's a business owner who makes enough income for frugal living but not high enough to buy private medical insurance. In Minnesota, the government has a program called MinnesotaCare where people can buy medical insurance with lower premiums. The program is intended to fill the gap for people who makes more than enough to qualify for any public medical assistance but not enough to buy private insurance. She is wonderfing if we have similar program. Please note that this is not a state medical care.

I'm new to Houston as well so I'm wondering if anyone know of a similar program.

You can buy a catastrophic coverage plan with high deductible for around $100 per month through BCBS. Also look at ehealthinsurance.com for quotes from all major carriers.

Check out the Harris County Healthcare Alliance's 3-share plan (http://www.hchalliance.org/documents/FullPressKit.pdf - broken link). Provides affordable health care benefits for small business employees. State pays a third, employer pays a third, and employee pays a third.
