The background on this homeless veterans thing started before Ronald Reagan. The theory was that "the government" had no right to compel an individual to a mental health institution. They had to enter on their own. It was written in stone. They were to stay in their neighborhoods and get treatment if they wanted.
Trouble was, there was never any funding for that kind of treatment. Sadly many veterans fell into that rabbit hole. The way governments fund is what puts all of these ill homeless fending for themselves depending on a little tax money and homeless shelter stuff.
In her book Bright-Sided, Barbara Ehrenreich, describes how a city can manage this situation for far less money per person if they set up single occupancy apartments with a caretaker type person to see that everybody gets their meds.
Cheryjohns was spot on in her description of what most all of us want.
There was a time when the only difference between liberals and conservatives in Texas was that liberals thought minorities had a right to vote.

Funny thread....here in Houston I tend to find that alot of conservatives talk the talk but dont walk the walk. Take Katy for example its a big time conservative area that continues to vote in more bonds that raises our overall tax rate thus giving us the highest tax rate in the state of TX. These same ppl who would give you all these reasons why we need to spend more money to build new schools will be the first ones to throw a fit if the situation was reversed. My example is referring to the fact that conservative tend to be okay when other ppl tax money directly benefits them but will throw a hissy-fit when their tax money goes help others.

If money was needed for a new schools in sunnyside(assume it's in your school dist.) most of these conservative would lose it, claiming it's a OBAMA plan, Big Gov., "why should I take a hike in taxes for those folks", etc...... lol. But when it comes to raising everyones else taxes to benefit their neighborhood, "it all about the kids" LMAO these same folk had a problem with the state's Robin Hood deal re; to helping poor School Dist. with money from well off dist....

The fun Conservative battle in the Champions area is conservative people telling land owners what to do with their property.
The very ppl who scream socialist Obama are telling a golf course owner what he can do on his own property. These very fine conservatives have even filed suit on him. Two water districts are in a pissing contest about where he is to get water for his townhouse development. This oh so fine conservative country club owner, who was about to go under, so he decided to turn 1/2 the course into townhouses was saved by FEMA when they totally remodeled Ravenaux with Federal Tax money after the hurricane. IMO, that is socialism at it's best. Sshhh! Don't tell them.
Don't get me started on the schools. We do 1950's separate but equal in Klein.

I have lived in nine states and I grew up in Colorado. I am slightly left of center politically and I only go to church for funerals or weddings. Some of the most conservative people I have met are from the north east. Move wherever you want, it really doesn't matter.

As you and crone both point out, "conservatives" are just as bad as liberals when it comes to wasting taxpayer money on their own ridiculous pet projects. Simply pointing out though that someone else is guilty of something equally rotten or worse than what you are guilty of does not absolve you.

Clinton and W are both responsible for joining hand in hand and jumping off the subprime mortgage cliff just like W and Obama are now both equally guilty in the huge Afhanistan f--- up.

Can't argue with you on this one.

Again, you brought up veterans, not me.

What you call "throwing more money at the situation," I call "creating a civilized society." You are assuming wasteful, inefficient spending, and I reject the inevitability of that.

Posting on message boards and helping the needy are not mutually exclusive. I've done plenty of both.

Hey, besides being alum from the same school, we agree on something. Miracles never cease.

Why don't you move to Seattle. That way you could be surrounded by liberals everywhere you go. I am a Republican and would like to move to Houston so that I could actually be surrounded by some Republicans for once.

I think both Clinton and W underestimated what the money changers could do with derivatives. By the time Countrywide finished, they all knew that nobody knew how much of that paper was out there, and how much was held by public employee pension funds.

I had coffee with a Republican State senator from the west side of Houston. Part of the tutorial was that there are good guys from both parties and there are jerks from both parties. The art of governing was for the good guys to keep the jerks from making a mess out of things. Opportunists are everywhere.
