Hello,

Searching hasn't turned up an answer to this question, so here goes.

My wife and I will be moving to Houston from the frozen north soon for a job transfer with my employer (my wife is looking forward to retiring as part of the move). We're both runners (although we wonder how much of the year we'll be able to handle the heat and humidity and run outside). Our prime consideration for a location is a shortish commute to my office on San Felipe between Chimney Rock and Sage. We were looking at townhomes in Rice Military on a scouting trip to Houston this weekend. It's close to the running path at Memorial Park and the commute in Sunday traffic took just 15 minutes. My question is, how long could I expect the morning and afternoon commute to be on a weekday? To be certain I'll rent a car on my next trip and measure it, but does anyone have actual experience with that commute?

Chris

15 minutes tops. Good choice to live there.

During rush hours, I'd probably add 10 minutes. You'll be going against traffic, but there will be more cars. Not bad at all.

Memorial park is great for running! in the humid summer, if you live near there, you can always go early in the morning or late evenings. Look at Camp Logan part of RiceMemorial, it's immediately next to the park and imo, one step up from the other parts of that Washington Corridor. It's more expensive though. Driving time isn't so bad, esp if you go against traffic.

The hard part is it backs up bad on Woodway. This commute is one of the reasons Houstonians typically measure distance in time and not miles. The distance isn't much but you have some serious bottleneck issues between your office and the park.

I used to office on Augusta and it would take 15+ minutes to get past 610 to get inside the loop. After that it was smooth sailing.

It's not a bad commute but allow for more than 15 minutes. I used to work at Williams Tower and it would take me probably around 25 minutes door to parking garage. I used to go Shepherd to Memorial/Woodway and then go up Post Oak. Coming home I usually came back down Sage (don't remember why!) and then would go back the same way although sometimes I would also take San Felipe to Kirby to Shepherd or even sometimes would wind through River Oaks to change it up. At any rate, you can easily make the commute without ever getting on the freeway, which was always my goal. Good luck!

I'd imagine you could ride a bike there quicker than you could drive & park.
