Do most people have what? Everyone has an accent anyplace in this world you go. Do you have an accent in Toronto? Kinda silly huh? Inside the city you have implants from everyplace so you dont find many Texas accents, when you do they usually are grey haired like they said above. If you go outside Houston you will find much more deep southern accents. Up where I am I get looked at crooked everytime I open my mouth because they are all red necks who go back many generations. They dont always enjoy city slickers invading their cattle ranches. I dont mind, I make friends easy.

I have a pretty generic accent. I was born in southern alabama, and moved to texas in the late '90s when I was a pre-teen. I sound southern, but not horrible.

I had a yankee mom w/ a new york accent...I got so confused as a kid. I suppose I have an accent but it is nowhere near the classic "southern drawl".

Actually most people living in Canada/US (that have been born and bred here) speak english pretty much the same way, with the exception of southern accent in the US, New York accent and Newfie accent. I was just wondering if most people in Houston still had that southern accent given the cultural diversity.

From the responses here, it looks like it's primarily the gray haired folks that do.

I'm a native Houstonian - however I have no accent. The majority of people I meet are surprised I am a native due to the lack of any accent whatsoever. Most people ask me "where are you from?" and are so surprised when I say "here."

Nope, just the older people. I go to school with several people from Houston and I brought some of my friends for the long weekend this week in Boston and people kept saying they couldn't believe we are from Houston.

Regional accents anywhere in America typically break down along ethnic lines and dialects, and Houston is no exception. In my 22 years experience living in the city, I've found that the "stereotypical Texan" accent is usually most pronounced in the white and black dialects, and most prevalent in the lower classes:

Tuesday - Teeoos-dee

All day - Owl day

job - jawb

time - taam

about - 'bot

thirsty - thar-sty

What did you say? - Do Hwaaat?

you - yeeu

And so on.

Of course the Hispanic-influenced dialect generally tends to be in a class of its own.
