I have never understood people who move into major parts of the city and want to stop certain projects. You knew you where moving into Houston a city that prides itself on no zoning and that anything can be built right across the street from you. It is funny when its a poor neighborhood like say third ward its called progress, nevermind that its home to some of the largest numbers of black home owners in Houston. They may not be in the best of shape but some families that have lived there in that area going back 4 and 5 generations. So yea I laugh when I hear about them cry about a highrise in there area. If you wanted something that harldly gets touched you should have picked the burbs

Technically in the 40's and 50's those were the burbs.

And regardless of whether they should have known or not, I imagine it does effect them. My neighborhood lives in the shadow of the Technip building and I imagine they enjoyed it more when there wasn't a 30 story building looking down on them. It is the price you pay for living in the city, but that's cold comfort. Having the city do their dirty work for them in the beginning is where I lose sympathy for them. The city was just a convenient bully to use. The activism they are pursuing now (while perhaps bordering on harassment) atleast doesn't cost taxpayers money.

I'm lost. What does 3rd ward have to do with the Ashby Highrise?

Although I'm all for progress. I can understand why some of the residents were up in arms. They are going from a nice calm pocket neighborhood in the city, to a neighborhood backing up to a small highrise. I think some of their claims are crazy, but it will add traffic and additional parking issues.

The third ward thing was to point to the fact that building something in a area like third ward is always championed as progress, dispite the fact that it displaces those who already live there, while building this will have little if any real neg effects on the area, yet some laud it as if they are suffering a great injustice at the hands of evil developers. The only real traffic issues I see would be during contruction as for parking must highrise tend to work parking into the building designs.

Why would building this in the third ward displace anyone? Nothing was Eminent Domained for this to happen. I think your confusing different issues. I haven't heard of anyone trying to build a high density project like this in a low property value area because...well...property values are low.

ugh Im not confusing issues , I,m saying say lets build something in third ward and everyone shurgs and says progress, say the same thing about building something in a well to do neighbor and its a problem, its not just limited to highrises , its been the case with many city and private projects, rails, stores etc..The highrise is not the point the point is how things are viewed. The whole displacment thing is my point they are not being asked to give up anything they just dont like the idea of it being there.

i get what Truth is saying, but people who live right smack in the middle of it have the right to complain about whatever they want as they are effected. the people in the third ward would have the right to complain about any displacement. both situations complaints may fall on deaf ears, but it is still people's right to complain

traffic through West U is already hell so I can understand that issue

I agree with the previous two posters. People who live in high-end neighborhoods tend to think they deserve the very best of everything, just the way they like it. If some developer comes in and changes something significant those people aren't going to be happy. And just like the people who get gentrified out of low-income neighborhoods, it is what it is. Stop crying.

And testmo's right too, we all have the right to complain but not the right to be heard.

I don't see why this would be viewed as progress if it was built smack dab in the middle of Eastwood neighborhood? It would still stick out like a sore thumb. Once it's built and occupied protesting would just be sore loser patheticness but it's not and if they somehow keep it from being built the only losers are the developers. If that makes other developers gunshy of the area then the residents have accomplished what they intended. *shrug*
