Hi yall,

Im a 32yr old Auto Mechanic looking to move to Houston. Are there plenty of jobs out there for me? And is housing really affordable also?
I will be moving with my fiance who will be graduating with her Masters in Social Work. Are there also plenty of job opportunities for her?
What are pros and cons to living in Texas?

Try to be more specific. Such as, do you want to live in the middle of the city or in outlying suburbs? What is your housing budget? And also depending on what exactly your wife does, it might be quite hard to find a social services job, due to lack of funds locally and on the state level. And, not to be stereotypical, but a lot of people that moved here from New York especially suburban areas because it is such a polar opposite from there. So if that applies to you, check out the many new higher density developments in the city.

4 bedrooms with that price range can get you whatever you want in Houston right now.

Go to HAR: HAR.com : Houston Real estate, Houston homes, Houston Realtors, TX Homes HAR will show you homes in the greater Houston area all over.
Click on find a home, search what type you're looking for (single family/condo-townhome, etc) and put in your price range and what other amenities you'd like then go.

Look at homes and when you see something do a Google search of that area and what it's like. And always look at a map for the commute. Because Houston = a major commute to wherever you want to go regardless of what area you live in.

Housing is very affordable, as long as you don't fear mixed neighborhoods and no kids to force you out of the places closer in. Even better if you dont care about water fountains and artificial ponds etc
$300K can buy alot. check out har.com

The Bus in Houston is very unreliable.

I'm used to ( I'm guessing being in NY,he may be as well ) to a bus that runs every 15 min or so. Subway service with trains every 15 minutes.

Thats just the truth. Thus, I'd say it'd be nice to have a car. I learned early on, you can't count on bus service here. Plus, with alot people against rail service here, public transportation is limited.

Coming from the northeast, thats just the truth. You need a car here. Or need to get one as soon as you can. It makes life easier in a city this size.

Bus service here and public transportation in NY are night and day.

Unreliable, but still an alternate usr of transportation. Over 200,000 people use it daily. However, I wouldn't recommend moving here without a car as well.
