It looks like we'll be moving to Houston in mid to late July. We had considered buying right away but have decided to rent for the first year or so. We really like the Heights and hope to find a place there. We have 2 kids under the age of 5 and would like to find a 3 or 2 bedroom cottage style home. We've seen some on har.com, the odd one on craigslist, where else should we be looking? Do most people use realtors to find a rental? That concept is foreign to me as a Canadian. Do the landlords pay the realtors?

Should we just drive around looking for For Rent signs?

Is it unrealistic to hope to find a 3 br Heights rental for less than $1800/month?

Any thoughts, ideas, opinions are welcome. TIA!

That's an interesting area. Many of the houses have been renovated over the last 10 years, or maybe back a little earlier than that. I have a friend who's mother lives there in a nice house. The property values are kind of high due to area popularity. Not sure what a rental should go for. I went to their Christmas even "Lights in the Heights" a few years ago and really enjoyed that. It's a beautiful area. I live down on the south side though in Friendswood so sorry that I can't help you more.

Hmm. I know some folks who are moving out of the Heights, probably in July. One is a 2-BR probably under $1000 ($900?). Craigslist might be an online option, also the Greensheet weekly publication, which is also online. I'm not sure what part of town of Houston that would fall under though.

If you don't find your first choice set up over there, you might expand the search across 45 into Lindale Park. Still inside the loop, not as gentrified but safe and decent and more affordable.

Depending on location, you should be able to find something, but the more renovated 3-bedroom places might be out of that range. There are a handful of two-bedrooms available in the Heights proper for just under $1,800 though. Are you open to town homes at all? You might have more options in those. You might want to consider using a realtor who specializes in the area; I believe the landlord will pay the Realtor.

HAR.com is probably your best bet, but you could probably check the Houston Chronicle classifieds or drive around the neighborhood; I see the occasional "For rent" sign out, but usually that's for a garage apartment.
