My husband and I are about to begin planning for baby #2. My first pregnancy went well and I had no issues. I tried to ask my doctor early on in my first pregnancy about the situations that may put me at a higher risk of having a c-section. After a lot of research I decided that I did not want one and felt I understood the reasons behind the high c-section rate in the US. But when I asked him he said "we can talk about that when we get closer" I should have taken that as a sign and seeked some calricication but it was my first pregnancy so I thougt it was a normal response. Fast forward to delivery...

I was 90% and 6cm when I went into labor and progressed well. I ended up having a c-section because my son was "too big" at 4:58pm. Granted my son was large (8lbs 12oz) but I feel like I could have done it with a more supportive doctor and that he was hoping to get out of there as close to 5:00.

I was looking into using a birthing center for my next pregnancy but found out that midwifes in texas aren't licensed to do VBACS. So after much research I found Dr.Dryden. She seems to be exactly the type of doctor I am looking for plus I want to deliver at TCH. After calling we found out that she is not able to take new patients without a refferal from a current patient or doctor.

Because the doctor option is problably out, I am tuning to the web to find and plead for one of her current patients to give me a refferal through them. ANy help will be greatly appreciated.

How about a home birth? Texas midwives can do vbacs at home births. It's basically the same as having it at a birth center, but it's at your house. They bring all the same equipment to your home as what would be at the birth center. Good luck with your search.

Or look into the midwives at St Lukes.
It's a midwife program but you have the security of delivering in the hospital.
We did this with our first and loved it.
My wife delivered natural, walking out the following day without a scratch.
No water births though. And not sure about VBAC. You'd have to look into that.

I am currently pregnant with baby #2 (due in February) and had a similar situation with Baby #1. I really feel like I had an unnecessary C-section. For this pregnancy I switched to one of the doctors at the Baylor Group. They deliver at St. Luke's now, but will start delivering at the TCH Women's Pavillion in April. I see Dr. Riera, but the whole group is pro-VBAC.

I had also looked into the mid-wives that deliver at St. Luke's, but when I called them they told me that they did not do VBACs.

Depending on your timeline, it might be good for you to attend the Houston B.I.R.T.H. fair in October. I did last year and that's where I was referred to the Baylor Group. I talked to some people there about which doctors would support a VBAC and the Baylor Group came up a couple times (Dr. Dryden's name was also mentioned). Since I was already about 20 weeks, I didn't have a lot of time to find a new doc. Fortunately, the Baylor group was able and willing to take me as a patient and I am very happy I made the switch.

As mentioned above, there are also quite a few homebirth midwives that do VBACS (I met a few at the BIRTH fair). Anyway, if you attend, you might meet someone there who can give you a referral to Dr. Dryden. Also, some doulas might be able to give you a referral (if you hire them).

Good luck!

Hello,

I am new to the area and looking for and OBGYN who will be supportive of a natural birth. I saw your thread, don't have friends or family who have had babies in the area and am hoping you won't mind telling me who you ended up going with and how the experience was.

Thanks,
Cate
