I will be moving there in June. I've been doing a little searching online, but with the endless sea of apartments in neighborhoods I know next to nothing about, I just don't even know where to begin.

Anybody have any suggestions on where to live (areas or specific apartment buildings) in Houston? I'm looking to rent a 1BR up to the 1100 price range (but might be willing to pay a little more if the apartment/area is nice) that is within a 15 minute drive of the Medical Center. Although I think I'm a little partial to the complexes with granite countertops and in-unit W/D, I just want a nice and relatively safe place to live. However, a place with restaurants, bars, and/or shopping within walking distance would be nice, or a park close by to go running, but these are by no means a necessity.

My search has been typically within the loop, in the TMC area, Old Spanish Trail area, along Braeswood, Museum District/Hermann Park, and Midtown. I would love to hear what you guys think about these areas and I would definitely appreciate any other suggestions from seasoned Houstonians! Thanks in advance!

Try Stonewood at I-10 and TC jester....not sure what they charge now but I got in for $678 in 2010 and left in 2012 paying $825

Quiet, on the less crowded side of the Heights and close to Washington Ave, I-10, 290, 610, I-45, etc.

Thanks @hbcu! I'll be going to Houston for a few days next week to check out some places and I will definitely put Stonewood on my list. It's difficult to decide on an apartment based solely on pictures on the internet...

We were in this situation 7 months ago, were suggested by our close friends about 'green briar apartments' for proximity to TMC.

@Firefly, I did see Greenbriar somewhere along my search, it is close to TMC and seems to be on the cheaper side. Is that where you live now? If so, how do you like the area?

No. We don't live in Houston city limits right now. We currently are renting in first colony, commonwealth area. Though we considered TMC area in the beginning, we went for sugar land suburbs for schooling reasons.

You probably want to consider Montrose which is about a 15 minute drive to TMC. Plenty of restaurants, bars and shops. Also has a Trader Joe's! Known for being a more liberal area of town. Allen Parkway for running or biking is 5 minutes away.
