Rumors resurface that Aeros are leaving Houston - Houston Chronicle

May be relocating to Des Moines if they don't renew the deal with Toyota Center. Maybe the Wild just wants them closer to Minnesota.

This might seem like a very dumb question....
why do they have to play in the Toyota Center? Can't they play anywhere else in Houston?

My guess is that they aren't a big enough draw in the Toyota Center and there are too many other events that the city would rather have there.

Definitely need a real hockey team. I think Houston can support an NHL team. Minor league hockey? Eh, up there with WNBA.

For a team that gets little to no coverage and/or publicity, they do quite well. They currently site 7th in the AHL in average attendance. The problem is the Toyota Center is big and expensive. They are unable to secure a lease agreement with the TC that will enable them to remain financially stable.

Maybe the Aero's leaving will turn out to be a blessing in disguise, as the NHL will have one less roadblock to relocating a team here. However, I'm sad to see them go... the Aero's have been good to the local youth hockey scene, and I'd hate to see youth hockey hurt because of the relocation.

Honestly, I won't really miss them. I have been to quite a few games. It is just not the same as NHL. As for landing a NHL team. Houston is the most sensible choice to get an expansion team or a team move here. The problem is Les Alexander wants to control it and he controls the Toyota center. He has for many years wanted to get a hockey team.
