I'm a 58 year old female that was just laid off from my Accounting Manager job in Los Angeles (entertainment industry) yesterday. I was in that position for two years, and the show I was supporting was cancelled after 16 months (was expected to run 10 years). My previous accounting experience was in the software development industry in Colorado Springs, CO, for over 10 years, again as a Sr. Accountant/Accounting Manager (that position ended due to an acquisition). I had rasied my two children in Colorado, and they were finally finished with college and on their own career paths (no more tuition payments!). I had lived in Colorado for 23 years, and wanted a change to a larger city with more population diversity.

I moved to Los Angeles two years ago since it was my home state and my sister lived here. I was offered numerous positions immediately, and my skill set and stability seemed to be very much in demand. However, now that I am unemployed, I am considering moving to Texas, where there are numerous places where the economies are growing, in particular, Houston. Even though I was able to purchase a home in LA, I'm finding Los Angeles to be verry expensive, youth oriented, and extremely congested. And I do not think this is where I would like to retire.

However, growing economy or not, what do you think my chances are of finding employment in Houston? My main concern is my age, 58, and my skill set. I am not a CPA/MBA, nor do I have Oil & Gas accounting experience. I need to work another 7 years to meet my retirement objectives.

Any suggestions and comments would be greatly appreciated.
