It is very possible, but probably unlikely. From your post I get that you are using "Detroit", in this case as a metaphor and not necessarily comparing apples-to-apples or industry-to-industry. After all, decades ago, Houston was not nearly as big a deal on the economic map, as it is today, and was eclipsed by names like Detroit as an economic epicenter. So in terms of "boom-to-bust", it seems unlikely, but who am I to predict what the future holds?

If the U.S. is to become energy independent because we can now fuel our cars and electric power plants on trash (like in Back to the Future), then yes, there is a chance Houston could suffer economically.......but we do make a lot of trash, so there's always that business you can go into.

No problem. I would just like to add that unions serve no place in today's workplace. Anyone joining a union is a gullible sap and deserves to lose their job. and yes, they were highly responsible for Detroits downfall. Only liberal blindness would suggest otherwise.

I Gotta agree. Honda and Toyota are thankful for the Detroit unions because without them they never would have made inroads into this country. But thanks to the unions, they are the two best selling car companies in the US and they help facilitate the growth in auto manufacturing in the right to work states all thanks to the demands of high school educated assembly line workers that were demanding 70k a year back in the 80's.

Unions destroyed the manufacturing base in this country. That's why all our products now say made in china.

What Houston really needs to do is invest in higher education, we need UH to become a tier 1 research university.

Hopefully you are being sarcastic. Globalization destroyed manufacturing, even without unions, how could we compete with Chinese labor?
