Contemplating relocation to the Houston area in general (suburbs included) and we were wondering which magnet high school focuses on international studies, has Chinese as one of the foreign language offerings, and travel opportunities. The student in question is academically strong in all areas including Chinese (as a foreign language) and enjoys international travel. Thanks.

Look at Bellaire High School. Lamar High School has Chinese language classes and offers the IB Diploma. These 2 are in HISD.

If you can get into Carnegie Vanguard I would go there regardless if they offer Chinese. I think it was ranked as the second best school in the state. Bellaire is the language magnet school. The nice thing about Lamar and Bellaire is they are actually fun schools to go to. Some of the magnet schools are horrible for a social life. Memorial is the other good HS, but I am not sure if they offer Chinese. It would not surprise me if they did. The rest of the good schools are smaller specialized magnet schools. Those schools listed are better than the suburbs schools.

Many thanks for everyone's input. He wants to continue with Chinese because we travel there a lot. We are going to try to look at Bellaire in particular though we want to explore all options first.

Also am I correct in that just Bellaire offers Russian? Their Russian program was in the Houston Chronicle some time ago.

Yes. It's the only public school Russian program in Houston. Tough I've heard lots of complaints about the teacher.

Clements has the Global Studies Academy and offers Chinese (and Spanish, German, Japanese, Latin, and French). They have multiple travel opportunities for the languages.
