I am from the suburbs of Philadelphia and am getting a relocation package to move to Houston. I have read a lot of blogs and other info and it looks great. I understand it is hot and humid in the summer. It looks like housing in Houston will be more affordable then were I live. I want to move to Tomball, Woodlands, or maybe Kingwood. I will be working on the outer loop around where 249 intersects it.

Looking for any advice and other general posts about Houston, Philly transplants and whatever.

Thank you.

You mean Beltway 8 and 249 as in where you're working. The only loop we have is 610. The big outer one is known as the Beltway or Beltway 8.

What do you want out of a living area? Budget? Schools? So on and so forth.

yes I meant Beltway 8 and 249. I am married with a 2 year old. So good family area with good schools in the future. Is it possible to get a nice house for 200K? Here in Philly I don't go to the city much because the suburbs have what we need. Grocery store, restaurants, mall, so would want a suburb in Houston with the same.

Tomball is where you need to spend your time looking. It is straight up on 249 and is close to your budget. Commute is pretty good as 249 is not that bad.

The Woodlands is certainly the nicest, but the most expensive and it will be a decent commute due to traffic. Spring is another option just to the south which will be cheaper, but still close to the Woodlands which has a mall and places to eat. Kingwood makes no sense since it is pretty far. There is of course Tomball. It is very conservative and country. Jersey Village would be worth looking at. You get what you pay for as far as schools and shopping. 200K will be tight even for Houston. If you can come up to 300K it will put you in a better area. You really need to find a relator. We have a sellers market down here. Houses can last a day on the market. Though I am sure it is not quite so crazy in the burbs.

Housing prices are going up quickly in Houston. Even some of the less desirable areas are seeing increases in price.

Is Atascocita too far away to consider? Do you have to worry about hurricanes and tornado's much?

Not really, but with a family, I would lean towards Kingwood more than Atascocita myself.

But, since we are on that topic:

Walden On Lake Houston would have the best deals in terms of bang for your buck:

19203 Nehoc Ln, Humble, TX 77346 - HAR.com

18702 Half Volley Ci, Humble, TX 77346 - HAR.com

However, I would say that's a better neighborhood for empty nesters and golf enthusiasts.

Eagle Springs is much more family centric with houses in your range:

12727 Cedar Grove Ct, Humble, TX 77346 - HAR.com

Pinehurst is quite affordable and a bit more family friendly than Waldon but not as family oriented as Eagle Springs:

20007 Pine Wind Drive, Humble, TX 77346 - HAR.com

Another area you may want to consider would be Summerwood. You could jump right on Beltway 8 and head around.

Of course, the problem with any of these is if you drive during peak rush hour Beltway 8 can get pretty bad during those times in several spots.

Are homes still going to be available in Eagle Springs in 2015?
