We are new to the Houston area and were wondering if there are any good places to eat on Christmas or Christmas Eve.

Additionally, you should be able to find some ethnic mom-and-pop restaurants open... taquerias, Vietnamese, Chinese, etc. If you're looking for something more traditional, I suggest you also try hotels.

My personal Xmas day tradition is to hang out at Inversion (this year! It was formerly the one day out of the year I would patronize the Starbucks in River Oaks) in the a.m., get some Vietnamese for a late lunch, and then head to the Angelika or Greenway Plaza for a late afternoon/early evening movie.

I've never been able to find too many places open on Christmas Eve but last year, having plans Christmas night, we ended up at Cleburne cafeteria for lunch. Got there at 10:30 and the line was out the door. Had we just waited until noon, the crowds had really thinned out. Guess everyone thought they had to suffer in the cold air in order to find seating. Actually, the food was pretty good, although nothin' beats home cooking! Here's a link:

In Thursday's Chronicle there will be a Preview insert and it should include restaurants that will be open. You will have much better luck getting something for Christmas Eve than on Christmas day itself. Rainbow Lodge is open http://rainbow-lodge.com/: (broken link)
HOLIDAY SCHEDULE OPEN:
Christmas Eve 5-10
Dec. 26th 11:30-10:30 (regular hours, lunch through dinner)

Call 713.861.8666 for Reservations

Here is a partial list of places open on the 25th: http://www.b4-u-eat.com/Christmas/xmdopen.asp

Here is another list of Christmas dinner options: http://www.christmas-restaurants.com/

Taquerias? Really? I assumed "ethnic" restaurants as far as non-Christian types would be open (and packed sometimes), because Christmas is just another day of the week. But I definitely wouldn't think a Mexican place would be open. I have been wrong before though!

I don't know, it's worth a shot. I would think a few of the local 24-hour restaurants or local chains like maybe Ruchi's or Spanish Flowers or Taqueria #4,187 () might be open.

Google for more suggestions.
