I'm moving to Houston in a couple of weeks and still have yet to find a place to live. I've searched online and found the big apartment complexes, but I'd really like something smaller and quieter. I'd love to find a garage apartment/carriage house/fourplex or something of the like, but I can't seem to find anything online (at least in my budget, which tops out at $1,000).

Any advice on finding a place like this in Houston?

For those kind of rentals, your best bet is to drive around and find "for rent" signs. You may find some on Craigslist or HAR.com (if you haven't already tried there). These are more common inside the Loop; you didn't say where you were looking to live but look in the neighborhoods of Montrose (77006/77098), the Heights (77007/77008/77009) or Eastwood (77023).

Yesterday, I saw a couple of small complexes on the east side of Heights Blvd with for lease signs. These are older complexes with a little character probably built in the 1950's. They were between I-10 and 18th St. or so. Probably 30 units or so in each I'm guessing.

Thanks, Dahak and txdemo! I've tried Craigslist and HAR, but I haven't had much luck. When I drive down next week, I'll definitely make some time to take a drive.

And I don't know the city at all, so I'd been looking for listing ins Montrose and the Heights, as those have both seem to be recommended all the time. I've also been looking in the Museum District. Really, I'd just like somewhere that's got character and is also relatively safe. Could anyone tell me a little about Eastwood?

For Montrose: Drive the streets between W. Alabama, Shepherd, Highway 59 and Montrose. That's where you'll find the most rentals of 4 plexes and small complexes. Particularly on the streets running parallel just south of W. Alabama. There are others on the north side of W. Alabama but I think they will be out of your price range.

Lots of garage apartments in Broadmoor. Landlords prefer people from the neighborhood or for you to drive by and then call them. Even our family own rental property advertised on the lawn still gets a lot of phone calls.

Eastwood is up and coming but still spotty. I would feel safe living there but I probably wouldn't take my evening run there. I would go to a park.
