KB Homes are known for their poor quality.

Anything KB - no

and yet.....and yet.... for the price point, it's probably the best thing out there.

Better, though, to come inwards to town and get an older house closer in.

I think it depends on your budget. People who can afford a different builder get a different builder. But if that is your budget, then they are an ok builder if that makes sense. One of my former coworkers had a KB and loved it. She had no problems. I found hers to be decent quality but plain in both interior and exterior -- no frills or extras. A lot of people on the forum may have higher budgets, or pretend to, and frown on the lesser product so you have to shop with whatever is in your range and get opinions from other homeowners of that product. Drive through some KB neighborhoods on a weekend when people are out, in the late afternoon and early evening before sun goes down. Stop and asking people out walking how they like their neighborhood and how they like their builder. That's your best gauge.

Better advice on a KB neighborhood, is to drive through one of their neighborhoods...5 years after it started. Then report back to us.

These homes are priced very high and maybe done that way for out of state buyers who have heard Katy schools but have not heard anything about the builder. Because of the price point the neighborhood will be fine, but I would not purchase a KB home at this price range as an investment. There is a good chance that your maintenance cost will be high if you lease it and you won't be able to sell it as easily as some of the other homes in the neighborhoods near by.

For what reason? Do you have a personal experience with them? I find that most people that say to avoid KB home have no experience with them and are just going off what they read on the internet.

I own a KB home and have had no issues with it. I'm also in a community that is going on 10 years old now and if I had to make the choice today...I would still buy a house here.

There are a lot more variables that go into buying a house than the company that builds it. I know people that have gone with what most people seem to consider high end builders that have had far more issues with their home than I've had with mine.
