Please help! I'm in a really bad situation and I'll be moving to the city of Houston next week for job opportunities. I'm coming from a relatively small town where jobs aren't as abundant, and my plan is to stay in a cheap motel until I save enough paychecks to afford better living arrangements. As far as work, I have experience in Customer Service, Retail and Childcare, so I'll most likely be looking for work in those fields.

I have $600 saved up at the moment and I'll need a cheap extended stay motel/hotel to live in until I get on my feet (maybe two months tops). I've heard rumors of motels starting at $19 a night, but I've yet to actually find one! All the ones I see online are $49 and up and that's too expensive! Please help. I don't care about how run-down the motels are, as long as I have somewhere to lay my head temporarily.

P.S.: I also currently have a vehicle, but it's old and not in tip to shape, so I'm not sure I'll be able to transport it from Missouri to Texas securely. I'll probably end up selling it before I move, which means I'll be on public transit when I come to Houston.

Go with one of the extended stay hotels they might be cheaper. Here is another idea go to Craigslist and look at the room / shared section you might be able to rent a room for 3 to 5 months for $350 to $450 a month

can you sell your car and loan to buy a reliable used car to take to houston? it will be difficult to live here without a car. with a car, you can choose which room for rent at craiglist you want. as you said you have a job waiting so i will consider getting a reliable used car.

No, the OP does NOT have a job waiting.

OP, you might wait until you have saved more. To come to Houston with only $600, a car on its last leg, and no job is scary.

Elsewhere you describe yourself as a 20-something, single woman. Please, please, please dont look for the cheapest motel -- and dont share a room with anyone you find on Craigslist. If you're from a small town, you have no idea how dangerous parts of Houston, especially the cheap-rent areas, and some people can be.

Your work background is retail, child care, customer service. Why don't you consider applying for jobs in the apartment communities themselves? They seem to be always looking for leasing agents - some will hire with no apartment experience - and a lot of times, you can live on-site as part of the compensation package. Eliminates having to drive to work, also.

Don't wander around applying - concentrate on those actively looking to hire.

Sounds like a prime candidate for NOT moving to Houston.

You will end up homeless (or worse) with $600 to your name, a broken down car, and no job leads. You will burn a good chuck of your savings with transportation costs from Missouri to here. Please think about what you are doing.

You need a car to live in Houston. If you don't have one, you will be virtually helpless and a very unattractive candidate for nearly all jobs because of that.

You are not ready. You do not have the resources. You are setting yourself up for a new level of abject misery if you pursue this plan the way you have described it.

I hope for your own sake, you will reconsider.
