Charcoal is upscale and expensive but really awesome. Check out Texas Monthly online for restaurant reviews. They also have feature articles on the best places to eat texmex, Rita's, etc. Any place mentioned is worth a visit. There are so many good places it may depend on her personality and they type of place she enjoys. Super casual to very upscale/funky dive to polished.

Don't get snarky. The OP is yet to find housing to fit his budget. Plenty of posters have already highlighted the insolvency of his wishlist. I'd say my points are very much relevant. Teaching jobs are not exactly one-offs, nor particularly high earning in Texas so as to demand stern anchoring to the Houston metro. They can be found anywhere in Texas. $1100/mo in the supposed swank of Houston on the other hand......

$1,100 is the range for a ONE bedroom condo in the nicer parts of Galleria area north of San Felipe Rd in Houston ISD. Once you know the school she'll be teaching at, you can narrow down the search. At $1,100 it likely would have to be a one bedroom if you want to be close to midtown.

The tunnels are for office workers to get around downtown while avoiding the heat. Walking through them is similar to walking through airport tunnels with the occasional airport type food court under major buildings. You can take the tunnels to 600 Travis St (chase tower) and they have an observation deck with good views on the top. No real great restaurants down there but there is a Becks Prime which makes a great burger but it gets super packed at lunch time.

The observation deck is now permanently closed to the public

Property manager Hines released a statement on Tuesday about the closure, saying that the closure is permanent and was done in the interest of the building's tenants.

"After careful consideration, ownership and management of the JPMorgan Chase Tower (also known as 600 Travis) have made the difficult decision to restrict access to the building’s 60th floor “sky lobby” strictly to building tenants and their authorized visitors. Previously, this elevator transfer floor had served as a popular unofficial “observation point.”

“Our primary focus is to provide a quality experience for our tenants and their employees who were often inconvenienced by the extra non-business-related traffic in the building," a Hines spokesperson said in the statement.

I believe the tunnels close by 7pm and closed on weekends (I worked downtown years ago, don't know if that has changed). The Beck's in the tunnel is only open for lunch on weekdays...

There are a lot of good places in the tunnels. Its not like the typical airport food court (although airports are getting better). Most lunch places in downtown are in the tunnels. In some places they would be on the streets. In Houston they are in the tunnels. Now its closed in the evenings, so you don't see the type of restaurants that depend on dinner business there (although I think Birraporettis near the Alley Theatre is connected to the tunnel). Treebeard's (which also has two above ground locations downtown) and Rajun Cajun (also in Greenway Plaza) are a couple of places I frequently went to down in the tunnel. Souper Salad is a really good soup and sandwich place. There are many, many places.

There's a lot of options for caribbean cuisine in Houston, especially Houston
just get in Yelp and search for Colombian or Venezuelan restaurants.

I disagree that most lunch places are in the tunnels. There are a ton of places to eat downtown not in the tunnels and mostly better than whats in the tunnels. I worked downtown for years and have eaten just about everywhere.
