A lot of those Houstonians are actually moving to Austin. Harris County was the second largest source of transplants into Austin. LA wasn't even top 5.

California, in fact, isn't even in the Top 5 when it comes to Austin transplants. Here's a look at the Top 10 counties providing the most transplants to Austin, in descending order. (Thanks to Brian Kelsey of Civic Analytics):

Williamson (TX)
Harris (TX) (Houston)
Hays (TX)
Dallas (TX)
Bexar (TX) (San Antonio)
Bastrop (TX)
Los Angeles (CA)
Tarrant (TX) (Fort Worth)
Fort Bend (TX) (Houston area)
Bell (TX) (Temple/Belton/Killeen)

When you look at the big picture, Harris county is a crime-ridden, multicultural paradise resembling a third world welfare state more and more with each passing day. However there are some extremely safe areas if you can afford it. So That said, as long as there is high paying work here I am staying. However I see this threatened more and more by offshoring to be competitive, on the front end at least.

Right. People over here acting like Harris County is Mogadishu or something. It's funny because as the place has gotten more diverse and bigger, it's actually gotten safer. Houston crime in the 80s and 90s was far worse. My mom still tells me stories of regularly running every red light on South Park Boulevard (bonus points for those who know what that street is called today) to get home because she was scared of being robbed/jacked/shot/etc. There's still crime today and we could certainly do better, but the rate is not even close to what it was back then.

The difference is, unlike now, every single crime wasn't immediately reported and people weren't aware of a lot of things that they are aware of today. People who are naturally scared of life must have a really hard time existing in the 24-hour news cycle world that we live in.

This is exactly why the premise of this thread is BS. Houston is more safe today even with all of our "illegals" than it was when we had less of them and when it was less diverse.

Too many people have bought into Donald Trumps dystopian fever dream of America and it doesnt exist.

People have completely lost the art of critical thinking and how to think for themselves, research for themselves, hell do anything for themselves. It's sad stuff.

Well, enough folks think for themselves and realize the decrease in crime that the urban core of Houston has boomed in the last 20 years with affluence. Whereas, up to the mid-1990s, everyone was scared of it and you could buy in most places for a song as people (meaning white folks) fled.

While the guy saying Harris county is a welfare state is being a bit silly at this point, it is disconcerting the state of the Houston pension system. Unless the market keeps roaring may have serious city cutbacks in police etc. in 5 years or so which will make the burbs more appealing since it doesn't have that baggage.

Being from LA myself, I cannot think of a part of California as decrepit as parts of the Texas-Mexico border or the Golden Triangle. Even the California-Mexico border isnt quite as bad.
