Depending on where you live, flooding during any extended, heavy rain event - much less a hurricane- is a legitimate concern.

Yeah...I've seen some very huge ones here. I'm originally from Massachusetts so I'm still getting adjusted. Do most apartments have issues with bugs? I just can't deal with seeing them all the time in my apartment.

in what part of town will you work? I live in D/FW but also from the Houston area. Traffic is worse. The population is more diverse. Singles tend to live on the west/southwest side of the metro area. My favorite neighborhood is the Heights, just northwest of downtown. Houston's a great foodie town.

Shopping is very good in Houston but I'd rate D/FW as better. Downtown is pretty vibrant with the Astros, Houston Dynamo soccer and Rockets at downtown venues. They have a nice downtown park.

AVOID US 290 for the next two years as its under construction and traffic is worse than bad at rush hour. Also if you use Beltway 8 with is the a second loop, toll plazas are not fully electronic, i.e. if you don't have a toll tag, you have to get in line. the lines at rush hour will bring a tear to your eye.


Fashion Shopping - The Galleria by far, then Memorial City, City Centre on the westside. Also, along Westheimer inside Loop 610 is high end.

Great medical care with the Texas Medical Center, the largest healthcare complex anywhere on Earth.

What do you plan to do for a living? That's the biggest driver of which city, which neighborhood is best for you. I wouldn't plan to move here without a job lined up - Houston is a miserable place to be poor.

If those are the musical genres you're interested in, you should do just fine here. The area has produced Grammy-winning artists from each of those genres and you should be able to find those scenes fairly easily. Austin is definitely not as strong on the R&B and hip-hop side, but probably has a better rock/guitar scene.
