It's hard to believe that this is real, Mayor Turner's Deputy Communications Director and Press Secretary Mary Benton (formerly of KPRC Channel 2) tweeted the following statement today in response to a conversation about the vote of no confidence that the HFD is planning for Chief Pena who's a Turner appointee. How disconnected from reality does a person in her position have to be to make a statement like this?

https://www.houstonchronicle.com/new...n-14409361.php

Quote:
Houston Fire Chief Sam Peña will face a “no confidence” vote by members of the city’s fire union over what nearly 100 district chiefs say has been a lack of leadership and a failure to adequately equip or pay firefighters.

The vote, which is expected to take place in the next week, would have no practical effect on Peña’s position. Mayor Sylvester Turner is the only person who can remove Peña from the position he has held since the mayor appointed him in 2016.

The union’s Tuesday announcement marks the latest development in the increasingly fraught relationship between rank-and-file firefighters and the Turner administration.

I don't think she's comparing slavery and the HFD pay raise in kind. In fact, she's doing the opposite: she's comparing them according to their dissimilarities. The HFD pay raise IS absurd though. I haven't had one person explain to me how it could ever actually be sustainable--and I'm a union supporter.

Why even bring up slavery? You can't honestly believe that she just accidentally brought up slavery, a hot button issue that has zero to do with the topic.

She was looking for the most ridiculous comparison she could find. It is difficult to get some folks to understand that a vote like we had for Prop B can be appealed if the proposition violates state law or the state Constitution. It doesn't matter if 100% of the people in the City supported the proposition, city charter amendments can't violate state law. And that's not determined until after the vote.

I somehow forgot about her history of making irrational and ignorant statements about racism.

I'm toxic because I want to talk about corruption in Houston's City government? What exactly is my agenda? I've gone far out of my way to be objective and present topics here that relate directly to Houston, I'm sorry if I'm upsetting your very small bubble.

Check your account settings, learn how the ignore list option. You'll love it.

You've been here since 2008 and haven't figured that out?

I don't blame you though.
