I mailed my check to them last Wednesday. I’ll call them tomorrow, but do any of you have any experience with the typical turnaround time?

HCAD, or the Tax Office? I wouldn't bother calling until the 26th, as Harris County offices are closed on the 24th and 25th.

This is the busy time of year for the tax folks, so it may take a while to get your check processed and deposited.

Busy? Yes? I thought that they would surely hire extra temps to process the incoming funds. I’m a bit worried about the quality of the mail service lately. Just after Thanksgiving, I mailed a letter from San Antonio to Houston that took a whole week to get where it was supposed to be.

The answer is that the HCAD cashed my check already, appeared on my online account last night.

Not sure of your particular situation but for tax reporting purposes it is the postmark date that matters. As long as the postmark date is 12/31 then property taxes can be deducted in the current year. It doesn’t matter when the check is cashed.

Another reminder is that HCAD doesn't cash checks. It's the Harris County Tax Assessor, plus, depending on where you live an dhow you pay, the school district and MUD. HCAD is only responsible for determining the taxable value of the property, and doesn't collect any taxes.

If you are concerned with the timing why not pay online instead of mailing a check?
