Is it true that Houston has one of the highest cancer rates in the nation? I read it from a poster on this board. Where can I find data on this? Thanks.

Wow! So why do so many still love it here? Aren't they afraid of the risk to their health?

I was baptized in benzene as an infant. I'm well on my way to the obituary pages. No sense in dwelling on it or fearing the inevitable.

It's a little bit of both. I was born and raised in an oil refinery town, so maybe I wasn't being entirely facetious. Houston is an industrial port city with large petrochemical facilities.

You'll die faster if you worry too much.

What kind of cancer? The Greater Houston area may have one of the highest rates in the nation of a certain type of cancer. Considering it's 600 square miles we're talking, I would think cancer rates would vary by zip code and proximity to refineries and whatnot. Sounds like it's time to use your Google-fu.

If you're that concerned, don't move to the east side.

What, Houston has one the highest cancer rates? Don't you believe it. Houston is the best city all around. Everything here is better than everywhere else. And don't you believe what they say about the summer here either.

You have to be realistic about the statistics. Alot of the people in those studies (refinery areas of course) actually work at the refineries (and chemical plants) and have more direct exposure than just walking around the city on a random day (include their families indirectly to exposure). Also look at ages involved. The air quality in Houston is substantially better than it was 20 years ago and extremely better than it was 40 years ago.
