We come to Houston for 3 weeks soon. Can anyone give me a rough estimation of how much it costs to hire a car? Someone told me Alamo was good, any other tips ?

When we moved here last year my husband came down before me by about 6 weeks. We rented a car for him from Alamo and paid approx $128.00 per week. We found that we got the best rates using a travel site like Expedia.com to book it. Travel sites will give you the costs for all the car companies so you can compare. If its possible to pick it up and drop if off at a neighborhood location rather than at the airport, its even cheaper! Remember that they will only allow rental for 30 days and then you have to come back in a sign a new rental agreement. The rates change constantly and vary by the time of year. You will have to enter the real dates you will be visiting to get the actuals.

Check Orbitz or Expedia first, they will give you the cost from every major rental company for each class of car for the length of your visit.

Try Kayak.com to search all the sites at the same time.

Phew, that doesn't sound as bad as I thought, I'm sure it costs alot more than that here in Europe. We don't need one direct from the airport either. Thanks for all the info

Also...try to book it as far in advance as possible. As you get closer to the date you need it, the prices will sometimes go up. You will be asked to give a credit card number to hold it but the card is not charged until you actually are at the counter renting the vehicle. Another tip for you.....if you can get your hands on a GPS with US maps it will be a big help navigating around the Houston area
