Now that I have 'almost' decided to move to Houston, I see all these threads about crime in the area. Reading the Chronicle, there were 4 people shot dead overnight.

So is crime getting worse lately, and why? Is it localized? Are the thugs branching out to 'safer' suburbs?

I think crime is getting worse all over this country due to the economy.

Yes it may be getting worse, but I think it's happening everywhere, not just Houston.
I have a good friend who works for Travis County (Austin) who told me it's worse there too, and that this happens every time the economy goes bad.

Last night was just a bad night in Houston as far as murders go.
I can't say serious crime is going up in the city.
Nothing like the increase we saw after Katrina.

No more crime than any big city. If your not involved with drugs or typically carry large sums of cash around your chances of being the victim of a violent crime are statistically almost 0.

I believe crime in general is up around the country due to the recession. Since it looks like we'll be pulling out of the recession late this year or early next year, hopefully crime stats will begin to turn around. I would say, the bigger the city, the more they will be affected, and since Houston is the 4th largest city in the nation, they'll be the 4th most affected.

I don't know what economic indicators you've been looking at but this recession/depression looks like lasting for a lot longer than you seem to think.

We'll be lucky to be out of the woods sometime in the mid 'teenies'.

Not really. Most experts that I have read think the recession will end near the end of 2009/beginning of 2010 with actual recovery beginning in 2010.

Manufacturing inicators ticking up, surprising real estate numbers here and there, and layoffs leveling off have indicated that its possible. Also, the stock market, which usually is a leading indicator for 3-6 months out has been steadily rising as well.

With the economic downturn and the influx of people coming here I think it will get worse. Its part of living in a big city.

You also have to remember that this is a Forum. There are people that like to stir things up and make unsubstantiated statements. It is easy to do in a place where everyone is fairly anonymous.

Houston is the 4th largest city in the country...there is crime....in all parts. Despite its shortcomings, I enjoy living here. Don't let the boards scare you from coming here if that is something you really would like to do.

Good luck -
