As the area is called now is Houston-Baytown-Sugarland but with the explosive growth of The Woodlands and it's growth of corporate headquarters, will it displace Sugarland or Baytown in a spot as a principal city in the metro area by 2010? My guess is it won't because it's not yet its own city but who knows? The census identifies it as a census designated area.

What are your thoughts?

I don't see how it'd really make a difference. Whatever the bureaucrats call it, it's Greater Houston to most regular folks.

Definitely not by 2010, Sugar Land is probably going to be the principle economic suburb for awhile.

Uhm...maybe I'm wrong, but as far as I know, the Woodlands is an area not a city at all. Was it incorporated lately? I remember that they pay off Houston on a regular basis to keep from getting annexed. That started a few years ago.

I've only heard it called Houston/Galveston area. Where did Baytown and Sugarland slip in?

I think someone has been reading the Wiki listing which includes Sugarland and Baytown. People need to understand that Wiki is written by people who may/may not be biased, or not of the same opinions, or same way of expressing things as them.

Can't those wiki pages be edited by anyone?

Yes, but it doesn't come from Wikipedia. It comes from the Census Bureau.

That said, my earlier statement stands...it's either Greater Houston or Houston/Galveston to everyone but bureaucrats and beancounters. Or just Houston. Seems like that's sufficient enough to describe anything in an eight-county area for some.

Yeah Galveston got displaced by Sugarland as the principal city back in 2003. I don't think Sugarland will be displaced but my guess is Baytown will.

I'm surprised Pasadena isn't listed as a ''principal city'' instead of Baytown considering there are 150-160k people there now. Deer Park, LaPorte and Baytown are something like outskirts of Pasadena to me anyway.

I don't know the method our infallible government uses to come up with principal cities but apparently population size isn't it. I think League City even has as many people as Baytown.
