To Travelguy_73:

PT Barnum: There is a sucker (fool) born every minute.
Thomas Tusser: A fool and his money are soon parted.

Summary: If you think a mandatory HOA will protect you, you will soon learn the wisdom of those two quotes.

One more quote you should learn:
Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience. C.S. Lewis

HOA Boards (moral busybodies) do everything with the approval of their own conscience (they believe they are "protecting" the neighborhood and are morally superior to their neighbors). There are countless victims of HOAs because there is no "protection" from abusive HOA board members (and their slave masters - management companies and HOA attorneys).

Some people have to learn from the school of experience. If you're not on the board, then don't be fooled. If you're on the board of the WCC, then your response explains everything.

Quite a first posting, thanks for sharing your wisdom. Not sure what HOA beat you as a child, but you certainly have my sympathy if you think that those quotes have much relevance at all. For your sake, I hope you live in a place where all of your neighbors do what they are supposed to to keep the quality of life in your area as high as is reasonably possible. Or you move out to the country with your conspiracy theories and take up a hobby that divorces you from the evil do-gooders and busybodies of life.

And to be clear, I'm not presently on the WCC board, or any board for that matter. Probably not morally superior enough.

Just reminder Travelguy, I warned you.

If these one-time posters want to clog up a thread with their page long babbling dissertations on how the tens of thousands of people living in HOA arrangements in the Houston area are doing so under people comparable to Nazis and KKK. That these nazis will have the police escort them out of their house at any moment, so on and so forth, go for it. This thread, however, is on Westbury. Start a new thread just for that. This one is not about the virtues or evils of HOAs. Back on topic please.

Travelguy_73,

NO HOA beat me as a child. I grew up in Westbury, graduated from Westbury HS in the 70's (before the school changed), and moved to another part of Houston after graduating from college. My parents moved when they retired, so we only know of one family still residing on the street from the time when I lived there. We lived under the voluntary civic association, no one complained about the neighbors, we had block parties and generally lived in peace with one another.

I live with my spouse and kids in one HOA and own another home in another HOA. We had no problems for years until a bunch of moral busybodies got elected to HOA board and started making up rules that do not exist in the CCRs. One of the board member's spouse was a realtor and every time the realtor spouse got a listing, the board member would have the HOA manager send letters to all the neighbors about trivial things, not in the CCRs. In that HOA, we had to sue them to get them to back off and quit asserting authority that they did not have. They eventually settled the suit and no longer bother us, but for those that do not have the funds to sue, they still suffer. All it took was one election for the HOA to go bad.

In our other HOA, they started doing the same thing. When we received a letter for a "made-up rules violation," I sent a letter asking where in the CCRs they had authority to demand what they were demanding? Pretty soon, we received a letter saying they had made a mistake. From what I learned, they had researched our previous case and decided not to do battle with us.

Summary - All it takes is one election for an HOA to go bad. Don't let Westbury become fodder for moral busybodies, HOA management companies and HOA attorneys who feast off "violations."
