Just curious guys, I've been in Houston 5 years so I'm quite familiar with the place. Just curious are there any jobs out there that are casual dress code compliant (I coined the phrase) and still pay decent? I currently work in IT for an Oil and Gas company. Pay is good but I absolutely hate dressing up. I understand I'm a young adult but I really just feel more comfortable and inspired to work when I'm not in slacks, button down and dress shoes every day. T-shirt and jeans would be awesome.

I've see some guys dressed up like chickens and holding signs for buffet "specials" on the side of the road lately. I'm not sure how much they make though.

Do you think the statues of liberty get paid more ?

The laborers outside Home Depot look casually dressed...

Being self-employed is the best way to control your own dress code. I wear what I want every day and I make more and work less than anyone else I know. The question you have to answer is, "How can I monetize the skills, education, and experience that I have without working for someone else?" If you answer that question, you can wear what you want and make as much or more than you make now.

My dad is a PhD'ed computer scientist at Halliburton (programs the tools) who works at the North Belt location, which I believe is their HQ and former Dresser Industries property, (a six-fig position, easy) and wears jeans and a tucked-in polo just about everyday. My dad has a long career as a successful O&G professional, worked at Halliburton's old 2135 Hwy 6 location for many years, Weatherford for a few and Pathfinder before it got bought out by Smith International, and went back to Halliburton and has always worn real casual clothes.

There's lots of people in Houston who don't show off (dress very modestly and take the van-pool to work) but make excellent money at energy firms.
