I will be moving to Houston a little later this year and am looking for somewhere to live. I will also, unfortunately, be living on a grad student's stipend with a small family, so I am looking for somewhere safe and inexpensive, preferably inside the loop. While I am not opposed to suburbia or planned communities, my wife and I prefer a more urban landscape. Are there any houses or condos for under 100k that might work?

You can cross out houses inside the loop for that price. You will be able to find some condos though. Most condos will be 1 to 2 bedrooms. You will be able to find a few 3 bedrooms. Check out Houston Real Estate - Houston Homes, Houston Home Value and Houston Relocation for available homes.

You could do some of the transitional areas in the east end. You might be surprised at the options. Run 77023 for places like Broadmoor, Eastlawn, Lawndale, Forest Hill & Mason Park. 77061 for Meadowbrook freeway and the southern half of Glenbrook. Meadowcreek Village in 77017. Southwest you can go to the southern sections of Westbury. That is about it for close in areas that you would have much interest in.

There is a list of the Cayton st 1956 Parade of Homes show houses (compiled by sevfiv) & I am pretty sure the first one, the "modern jr. executive" is going to be coming up pretty soon as a foreclosure. Don't know which REO agent will have it or when it will come up, but I would be surprised if it isn't under $100k easily.
