Hello to All:

I am planing to relocate to Houston in August and I have been trying to make a budget. I wanted to know how much people are paying for utilities in Houston for a one bedroom apartment (550-700sqft). I don't plan on sweating my way through the summer but I don't want a high bill either. Any reponses would be helpful.

I pay in the $300's in the summer for electricity for a 300sf home. April/May was $150. Comparison shop here:

Are you sure? $50 for electricity. Perhaps you are referring to gas?

What? Are you kidding me? "$300 per mo." in utility cost and you live in a "300 sq ft" HOME. Do you rent a studio or an efficiency because I don't know of any home that small? Anyhow, how do utilities amount to $300 mo???? That's unheard off.

Most apartments include Heat, in Texas you wouldn't need it. Water, Gas, Trash is usually included but you pay the "electric costs." These cost should be no more than $50 per mo max. Maybe a little more with A/C but still I say maybe $60-70 max.

What you're looking for should cost approx..$ 700 per mo/rent and $50-60 MAX in utilities. That's my estimate unless Texas charges the same for utilities as they do property taxes.

Mom- How much do utilities usually run and what's included in a standard Houston apartment. Please shed some light on this topic?

When you say "standard" I am going to assume you mean a commercially-run apartment complex. A 500-700 sq ft should be no higher than $100-$125 at the PEAK of summer heat...and that's keeping it at 72*F. Winter, maybe $40-$60.

Phone, cable, and Road Runner can be bundled for around $100-140/mo. or you can do them separately.

That's about it! You don't pay for gas, water, trash, etc in a standard apartment complex. That's in your rent.
