It's amazing to me how these articles slanted the incident in the protesters favor. I know. I was there. Ground zero.

So what happened then? From the articles, the protesters were outnumbered by marines 5 to 1, was this not the case?

Not all of the Marines were envolved in the fight. I imagine not all of the protesters were either. It happened too long ago for me to put a definite count on it. The police did not do anything to stop the fight. That part is true. I don't know if it's still possible for the reserve unit to get in any trouble, even after all these years,(I don't trust the government) so I will leave it at that.

I finally found the photos and articles at the Houston Public Library. Some from the Houston Chronicle and some fronm the Houston Post. I still believe that there was another newspaper there (not The Rag) but I haven't found those. These articles say 30 protestors and 45 Marines. Sounds about right to me.

The Houston Press was also a daily back in the day. There is a guy at Chron.com who does weekly articles on historic Houston. He has access to all sorts of things and lots of folks who were here then chime in. You may hit pay dirt e-mailing him.
The Houston Post was the liberal paper, the Chronicle was owned lock, stock and barrel by the conservative business establishment. Don't know where the 'red rag' stuff started.
Anyone who does not like the paper in any town is free to start their own.
