Do you guys think Huntsville will become Alabama's most populous city by 2020? It seems at current growth rates, it is a no brainer to pass Mobile and Montgomery by the next census. Birmingham might be a longshot to pass, but it is possible... and seems likely if not by 2020 than by 2030. Thoughts?

In 2010, it was projected that Huntsville would be the largest city in the state by 2020. The current admin does not seem to be as pro growth as Mayor Spencer's though so I am not certain it will happen that soon.

Loretta Spencer was not in office in 2010. Tommy Battle assumed office November 3, 2008 and was elected to a second term in August 2012.

Given that Birmingham's population is slowly growing, Huntsville won't get there as fast. I do see Huntsville getting past Mobile by 2020, maybe even Montgomery.

The fact that the top four cities in Alabama are all within about 25K of each other is crazy. I don't think there's a state in the country that have four of its biggest cities all bunched together like that. Arkansas may be the closest with Fort Smith, Fayetteville and Springdale all clustered, but neither are overtaking Little Rock soon.

If not by 2020, I think it's a given that the city of Huntsville will surpass the city of Birmingham in population relatively soon afterward. Huntsville still has room to expand; whereas, Birmingham is fairly well locked in by surrounding municipalities. Of course, the metropolitan area populations are a completely different animal.

Hunstville really seems like it has boom town potential. Educated, diverse population. Beautiful topography and surroundings. Nice climate.

Expand? I guess. Hsv city limits in limestone county is a mess. Huntsville doesn't have the infrastructure to keep up with what it has now.

There is plenty of room in the land HSV has acquired in recent years. Lots of growth potential in the jobs area and the arsenal is doing just fine. Could be even better if another round of BRAC comes around, the Army has invested far too much in this area for us to loose. Boeing and every other company wouldn't have made such a large investment here if it was anything but a sure thing.

HSV will continue to grow, plenty of room for homes, I mean come on, they aren't even done with Lendon yet!

With over 200 square miles of land, I see no reason why Huntsville would be running out of room to grow anytime soon.
