I was dreading that standing in line to renew our drivers licenses this year. In researching whether another test would be involved, I came across the online site for simple renewals:

https://www.alabamainteractive.org/d...welcome.action

Five minutes and we both are done for another four years. YES!

How much is the credit card processing fee? Typically with anything associated with the government, a credit card processing fee is charged which ends up deterring me from using the service.

Are you confusing it with license plate renewal? Driver's Licenses are not through the county.

Not sure how much the fee part was. Total cost was about $40 per license so probably about $5 or so. DW can't physically stand in the long lines that long, so it was a no-brainer for us.

I read this today when I got into work - and wasn't going to post anything... But since then, I've had another 'Drivers License Adventure' that I feel I must share...

I moved to AL from GA. I have a GA drivers license (that doesn't expire for another 6 years - I got the one that is good for 8... but that's another subject. I recently bought a home here in Huntsville, and need to get my AL drivers license. Last Wednesday, I was on the Arsenal and went to turn in my GA license and get an AL one issued... I got there at 07:20 - and found that they only issue DL's on Wednesday, but only a certain number... That 'certain number' was reached at 07:15, so I wasn't able to get it exchanged. I then went to the courthouse in Huntsville, the county seat... After going through security and finding the DL counter, I was told that they don't do 'exchanges' - I have to go to an annex which I was thankful is just a couple of blocks away from the courthouse.

I drove to the annex on Church Street. I went in to find about 90% of the seats for those waiting are full. I was about the 10th person in line, but I was there, so I may as well be patient and just wait. When it was my turn, the woman asked for my SSN card... UH? My (and your) SSN is ONLY to be used by the IRS for tax matters, it is NOT to be used for any identification. (The Social Security Number is NOT to be Used for Identification).

My SSN card has been in my wallet for years... I know, it says not to keep it on your person, but I have... oh well... I opened my wallet and could not find it anywhere... I have no idea what's happened to my SSN. (I've got fraud alert so don't suggest I get that as I already have it - thanks...)

So, I have to leave without a new DL... I got home and looked high and low for that card, and cannot find it. I went to the Social Security Office and requested a replacement card. I went in around 09:30 - I didn't get called until 11:30 - and after a 2 minute question and answer session, I was told I'd have my replacement in a week to 10 days... So I went home...

I got my replacement card yesterday. I had an appointment not at all related this morning, and after those were met, I went to the DL annex again. I went in, finding the chairs full again - but only 3 in front of me in line. Having only to wait 3 or 5 minutes, when my turn came, there I was, with GA DL in hand, another form of ID - my SSN card, my birth certificate and I was ready.... Only to have the lady at the counter tell me that they're not issuing any more numbers for the day as they have a full slate....

This is ridiculous. First off, my SSN should NOT be used for id...
Secondly, why on earth at 1030 am would you stop allowing those of us there to get a dl not be able to be given the chance of taking care of business?

I'm behind a firewall at work and can't get on the https://www.schedulealdl.com website...
Looks like I need to schedule an appointment - I wonder what OTHER obstacles I'll encounter... we'll see....

If you had gone to the state web site you would have known ahead of time what the requirements are.
If I were you I would be there 30 minutes early. That means be there in line at 7:30am.

Requirements for Out-of-State License Transfers
- Out-of-state driver license.
- Social Security card. *
- One item from primary list, in addition to the Social Security card.
- $5 transfer fee (no checks).
- $36.25 to purchase license (no checks).

The most common item that would satisy the "One item from primary list" is
- Certified U.S. birth certificate issued by an agency designated by state or federal authority.

Requirements listed on the website aside, I, like you, am really tired of everyone requiring my SS# for identification purposes. It is NOT supposed to be and yet, they'll tell you that you cannot use/have/whatever their svcs without it. If I had the means, I'd start suing them. And then out of the other side of their mouth they tell you to protect your SS#. sigh.

I went through the same crap when I was changing from VA, did the on-base thing...waited for HOURS, only to be told as a foreigner I had to go to Decatur (bring my passport, legal residency card and DL)...after I sat there for 5 hrs, watching the juvies being escorted to the restroom for urine tests (girls) & an unknown amount of illegals be turned away for being, well, illegal...I finally got in and it was the same officer from base
Smooth sailing after that tho; and I can renew online from now on
