In comparison to where I grew up; Huntsville is Mayberry.

There are not daily homicides.
There are not weekly car jackings.
Drugs are not flowing through the area like the water down the Tennessee.
There are not neighborhoods you don't go into because you're not from that neighborhood.
The east side of Huntsville is not run by one family while the west side is run by another and who is in a war with gangs trying to muscle their way in.

Sounds like your retired or about to retire. If that is the case then I suggest picking a spot, renting a house for a year, and get to know the area and surrounding areas. If you like then plant your roots else move on and repeat.

Good luck.
You watch too much TV

It was still available last I heard, but that's been some time ago (maybe a year). It's probably still available - worth checking.

According to their site homes are available for rent for military retirees:

If you scroll down about midway on that link, just above "Take a Look", it looks like they lease to civil servants as well (says Civilian/non-Military).

If you're retired or don't mind the commute, consider the rural areas between Arab AL and Guntersville AL.

They have a decent hospital, Marshall Medical Center North, on Highway 69.

Plenty of Walmart's and Piggly Wiggly's in either direction, and a Publix in Guntersville.

Close enough to the Lake for fishing & boating.

2010 Census says the racial makeup of the City of Arab was 96.6% White, 0.1% Black or African American, 0.6% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.7% from other races, and 1.1% from two or more races. 1.7% were Hispanic or Latino.

High up in the mountains 720 feet Above Sea Level in case of catastrophic world wide Edgar Casey predicted biblical flooding.

Far enough off-the-grid so the aliens can't find ya (they eat the fat slow ones first anyhow).

Buy some wooded acreage, fence it in, install perimeter alert systems, get some alert dogs, lock & load, prep with food & well water, backup goats & chickens, and have peace and mind for you & the family while you watch the horrible news of the day unfold...

And turn that TV off!

Default no more tv

You're right about the turning off the TV - like drugs and alcohol, it will confuse ya into a stupor.

But the internet opens up the world of science and medical technologies.
Too bad so many folks are hooked on mind wasting porn and racism through it.

Knowing information around you (and worldwide) is most important in being prepared.

Monitor lots of airwaves such as Free to Air TV, trains, planes, ships, boats, vehicles, and radio systems from 6 GHz down to VLF (Very Low Frequencies) with SDR's (Software Define Radios) using a variety of satellite dishes, discones, vertical ground plane, horizontal dipoles, and ground spike antennas.
