The wife and I are considering a hiking trip in the Southeast in March. We have open tickets to fly into Atlanta and wondered about the hiking in the areas between there and Huntsville. We're looking for wooded day hikes, up to 10-12 miles or so, no backpacking. What we'd like is to stay in one spot for a week and venture out during the days.

Any suggestions on hikes or where to stay? I've posted this in the Birmingham forum as well.

Thanks.

Just Google "Alabama hiking" and there are worlds of info. Also, this site is helpful: Share The Wonder Of Alabama - Hiking Trails
In North Alabama: the Lookout Mountain area in NE Alabama, Monte Sano mountain state park in Huntsville (and check the National Speleological Society in Huntsville for caving hikes), Bankhead National Forest in NW Alabama, plus many, many state parks and even TVA-run parks.

If you fly into Alabama, you will need to rent a car to get around. I always rely on tripadvisor.com for info on lodging. And the state parks offer very reasonably priced lodging, in both hotels and cabins.
Welcome, and happy trekking!

Default Try North Georgia

From what you are describing, to have a weeks worth of variety in day hiking 10-12 miles, I would suggest the North Georgia area. Monte Sano and Walls of Jericho you can eat up in a day or two at most. Dahlonega or Helen, GA has lots of B&B and tourist accomodations and dozens of itineraries along Appalachian Trail / North GA mountains. One place to stay for out and back day trips is the Len Foote Hike Inn near Dahlonega, which I've stayed at and recommend.
