my husband and I are moving from Florida and thinking about northern Al (Looking at Limestone cty but open to suggestions). I am a city girl (originally from NY) and NEED stores at least 1/2 -45 minutes close. Hubby wants rural. Have to compromise. So we are looking for mountain views, pretty scenery.

Also I havn't seen any info regarding cable TV and high speed internet. Who are the carriers in the area up there and how much does it cost to get cable and HBO/SHO with cable internet?

What's better gas everthing or electric everything. Cheapest? What should we be aware of - Does everyone have city water - I saw that some people described some northwest counties as "clannish" - We are white but I do want a little diversity. so what counties are more suseptable to this?

Thanks for all the info. Have a SUPER day!!!

You might want to check out Marshall and/or Morgan county also depending on what you want to spend for housing. Lacey Springs, Arab, Guntersville are all within the driving distance you require. Will you or your husband be working in H'ville, if so then you may want to consider the drive during rush hour which will add 20-30 minutes to your commute.

Where do you live in FL.. I moved up here from Tampa

Thanks for the info - My husband is self-employed and I will be doing a transfer to a Starbucks. I was looking where Starbucks locations are and it looks like there is about 6-7 in Huntsville and 1 in Athens. So we need to stay in that vincity 30-45 outside the city.

We live in Largo/Seminole area and want OUT to nice quiet town.

I'm sitting here in Athens just down the street from the Starbucks. Ooh, I think I can see the sign! No mountain views here. There are some nice hilly rural farm country areas a little northwest, but for real mountains, you might need to head northeast or even into Tennessee.

Limestone is pretty nice. I work in Limestone County, although I live in Huntsville. But there are no mountain views here whatsoever. Your best bet for mountain views would be Huntsville and points east. I really like the area around Gurley up to New Market. Beautiful mountain views around there and still pretty much country. Although the sprawl is fast approaching. And you're still 30 minutes or less to Huntsville. Schools are also pretty good out that way if that's important to you. Good luck!

Default Why not Huntsville?

What don't you want to live in Huntsville? Better schools than Limestone County and a lot more to do. You'll have a hard time finding a house with natural gas, most have electric everything. Cable and internet will depend where you live. You can get Knology, Comcast, Direct TV, etc... I love it here, originally from Detroit.

Still figuring out how to use this thing. Huntsville is great, better than Limestone Co by far!! Cable and internet will depend where you live. Most every home down here is electric everything, except gas log fireplace. I'm from Detroit, have been here 3 1/2 years and love it! Email me if you need a good realtor!

Default Thanks to all who replied so far.

I just love this forum - You really can get a good idea of the area. my husband is going to to Al next week to check things out and this forum has helped to narrow things down a bit.

I do however have another question. In looking at the houses for sale on a gazillion websites - I see this subdivision called Metes and Bounds. can anyone let me know the deal with this subdivision. It seems to be a humungous community.

I know I had the same question when I was looking for a house. It really isn't a subdivision but..Metes and bounds" really refers to specific distance measurements(metes) and definite boundary markers(bounds).

I am sure a realtor can explain why they use that reference in their postings

Decatur has NO Starbucks. No, not one. We have 54,000 people and only a couple of local coffee shops. We must be the biggest city in the country with no Starbucks. Not that I'm complaining. I don't even drink coffee.
