I saw on the news that the University of Alabama system's three campuses will shed about 1,000 jobs in the next 18 months.

University of Alabama System chancellor warns its 3 campuses will lose about 1,000 jobs

HUNTSVILLE -- The University of Alabama System chancellor says its three campuses will shed some 1,000 jobs over the next 18 months because of a deepening budget crisis.
Chancellor Malcolm Portera, speaking today to the faculy senate at the University of Alabama in Huntsville, said the three campuses should expect realignments and consolidations.
He said Gov. Bob Riley told university presidents last week that it will be 2013 before state funding is back to the level it was prior to the recession.

UAH's new president had already informed a number of people a few weeks ago that their jobs were being closed out.

Yeah but they apparently have enough money to build an excessively nice parking garage (that is never even 1/4 of the way full, when they could have just expanded the parking lot behind the Shelby Center), and a coffee shop (using only the finest materials, of course--slate tiling and the like) inside the library... Also, serve a huge expensive dinner for hundreds of people, only to tell many of them later that they are out of a job (or maybe it was before the dinner, can't remember).

Oh yeah, and raise tuition on top if that.

I miss Frank Franz.

State higher ed budget cuts have been harsh the past couple years. Calhoun sent a bunch packing last year as well and probably more to come soon. Working as a bartender with a MEd in Higher Ed Admin ain't no joke! Well, at least I actually do like bartending ok

Unfortunately this is what just about every other university in the nation does. The administration has a captive audience and they know it. The students won't be able to do anything about it. Where will they park? How will they get to campus otherwise? What other options are there? Even if they do have a Facebook group with 400 members, today's students generally have a limited willingness and ability to organize themselves. They are mainly concerned with getting their classes finished, graduating and moving on.

Live close and/or walk? One of our faculty members' daughters got killed bicycling around UAH... Still, I see the effects of bugetary cutbacks here at Athens State University. On the other hand, the Alabama Community College System, which we are the black sheep of THAT family, is planning on spending ca. 40 Million dollars to adopt a single administrative software system.... ASU and Jeff State have the state of the art software, yet we will have to abandon it for a lesser system to conform to a committee's recommendation (apparently).

All freshman and sophomores must live on campus. There are an awful lot who live at home who now must shell out the bucks to live on campus.

This is hard to believe. Did I miss something?
