We are a retired couple contemplating a move to be near our daughter in Idaho falls. We will be buying our home. We'd like to know what activities are available for seniors. We like to walk a lot. Is the winter weather an obstacle for such things? Is ice a problem for driving or walking? We like working in the yard, gardening, flowers, vegatables. We are in good health and are very active. We are used to hiking and camping.
We'd like some pros and cons. Thank you. Motherlode 2

As for walking in winter, the most able bodied person can be faced with a challenge as we do get a far amount of snow, ice, winds and below freezing temperatures. Most folks who like to maintain their walking regime during winter, do so inside The Grand Teton Mall.

Your growing season is a short one, although some seasons my friends come up with lovely tomatoes and flowers. This season was particularly short, my apple tree could not even pull off a decent harvest.

Thank you for your comment. We have in the past lived in Yreka CA which had a zone 2 growing season and we see that Idaho Falls has a zone 2 growing season also. It is nice to hear you can grow apples.

You're quite welcome

Yes, almost everyone has an apple tree and if they don't it's a guarantee that someone they are related to has one

We are really wondering if it will be hard to get around in the winter months? Does the wind blow all the time, even in the summer time? We are thinking of this move very carefully.

Yes!! There are many seniors and services for seniors. Check this out: Eastern Idaho Community Action Partnership - Senior Centers
And please feel free to DM me if you have specific questions. I have worked in home care and am involved with folks working with seniors in the community.

I'm also a walker and a gardener, and acclimating to zone 4 still after 2 years. I swear by my Sorrel boots.

Thank you norcalmon 101 for your responds to our questions. We are in excellent health for our age and on no medicines. We want to stay that why as long as we can. With all the ice you must have in the winter months we wonder if we will be doing a lot of "slippin' and a slidin' ". What a funny site that would be.
