My family and I would like to move to northern Idaho. We would like a home off grid and are interested in country living. Any suggestions? We would like to grow our own food and have our own water source as well.

I lived off grid and we raised much of our own food in northern Idaho. Is this a newer idea you've had or have you already been reading Mother Earth News, Backwoods Home Magazine, etc.?

Maybe you could be more specific in what suggestions you're looking for?

when you say you want a home off the grid, do you mean no electricity?

Off-grid means off the power grid. Most off-gridders have electricity through other means like solar and wind (like me) or hydro.

Hello!, need some more specifics of what you would like. Price, area, have you been up here before, ect. More information the better!

I am envious of you.. Hope you succeed. North Idaho is a lot more beautiful than South Idaho (not even a comparison). The only exception would be the Sawtooth mountain area which is quite a marvel, in itself.

If you truly want to be off the grid in North Idaho you may want to look at places outside of Clark Fork or north of Bonners Ferry towards the Canadian border. And, in a SHTF scenario, being not far from the Canadian border couldn't hurt.

Why those places? Our place is in west Bonner county and we've done just fine off grid.

West of Bonners Ferry is good too! I was thinking of living in Metaline Falls for a while on the other side. However, because my business relied on high speed internet and none was available there, it was not feasible. Gorgeous area and very inexpensive to live. It truly is the last hidden piece of paradise in the Northwest.. Let's just keep it to ourselves and not broadcast it all over this forum..

Bonners Ferry is Boundary County.
We live in west Bonner County...the Priest River/Priest Lake area. Beautiful country.
