It is mandatory, if the family wants to claim the body. Most of the time, people do local fundraisers or they ask close family here in the U.S. to help with the cost. However, there is also the option of keeping the body here. If the wife and children are here, even if the wife is not legal, she can pay to have him buried here in the U.S. Immediate family in Mexico can also get an emergency visa to come and attend the service.
Another good point in the article that all should know is the importance for illegal immigrants to get an ID from the Mexican Consulate. If in any case something happens to an illegal here and dies, this is a good way to identify the body, notify the family and have them claim the body.

So why should we care? I'm sure as a Canadian you certainly feel the pain of being a citizen of a world superpower that has a parasite/host relationship with a third world nation.....

How much cheaper is it for anyone else to repatriate a body from some other country? Is it much less than $7000 for an American for example to transport a corpse from Mexico?
Certainly illegals don't expect American taxpayers to pay this cost for them and they could have a cremation here and get the ashes back pretty easily I think.

The coyotes wouldn't care about the smell - they don't care about anything but money - and border patrol wouldn't be after them if they're heading into Mexico - I hope - because it's the other direction border patrol should care about.
