I am reminded of the tried and true saying, "Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it."

I've seen many people propose that the solution to the problem of illegal immigration is building 2,000 miles worth of fence (or better yet, "a wall!") and patrolling it.

You do realize that this has NEVER worked. Not in 3,000 years of human history has this ever worked. Nations have had immigration problems since there was such a thing as nations, and building a wall has never worked. Not once. It did not work for the Chinese. It did not work for the Romans.

So rather than falling back on failed solutions, why don't we try something that works?

Didn't work for the Romans or the Chinese.

And really, why pay the trillions that will cost rather than a solution that might not even take millions?

Building a wall strikes me as being more about punishing illegals than fixing the problem. Let's fix the problem.

Actually, the wall did a pretty good job in E. Germany. And it's kept the flow between N. & S. Korea to a barely measurable trickle.

Now just add a trench filled with molten lava on the other side of the fence and I guarantee you 100% impermeability.

The Berlin Wall and the DMZ are NOT meant to keep illegals out. They were built to keep legals in. (And they're not even very good at that.) BIG DIFFERENCE!

Let's run down and taser the businesses who keep giving them jobs. Do that for a few years, and the flood of illegal immigrants will turn to a trickle. We can control a trickle.

I say a wall, a patrol (national guard with guns), and extremely stiff penalties to the employers who hire illegals. I don't think you understand though, MarkS. Illegals aren't all just nice people trying to find a decent job. Many, many deal in drugs, are menbers of gangs and break a lot more laws than just crossing the border.
