I would like the viewpoint of self identified liberals or people who are in the U.S without legal status. My question is what should the U.S policy be? Should we allow anyone to move in who can get here? Should there be no restrictions? The media only seems to report how cruel the conservatives are but never offer the liberal alternative.
This liberal puts Americans first. Illegals are a drain on our economy and do not contribute positively to our way of life.
This is what gets under people's skin and causes a negative reaction. It's not a black & white situation and instead of us crunching the hard lined middle issues, we prefer to debate the extreme ideas such as what you wrote.
So now, instead of fixing the system, we will be pulled out to sea by your liberal counterparts and use harsh criticism against undocumented immigrants to "keep the fight alive" and off methods of actually fixing the system. It's the oldest trick in the book- use social bias to counter the argument.
The problem with the internet is that it reveals a lot of emotion but likewise, reveals patterns in which people operate- ON BOTH SIDES..
if big business didn't hire illegals we would have far less of them. big business should be heavily fined. big business is protected by lobbyist and all the mega dollars they give to politicians. fix that and problem solved for the most part.

That's just it...our system isn't "broken." People whine about it being "broken" because it doesn't give them the desired result. We don't owe anyone a visa. Even being married to an American citizen doesn't guarantee you a visa, let alone citizenship.
The illegal immigration issue is a lot like the war on drugs. It would be simple to fix if there were just no demand.
We all like cheap labor picking our crops, working in restaurants, landscaping and all those other things that illegals fall into. Business REALLY likes them, as they make more money too.
Until we're prepared, both business and personally to accept significantly higher costs on a large swath of our lives, we'll continue to have a demand for people we can exploit.
So simple really. Just stop doing cocaine, and the drug wars stop. Just stop exploiting illegals, and the illegals stop.

Speak for yourself. There is no "we" in this. I don't want illegals working any jobs in this country. They are no bargain when you factor in the $113 billion they cost us per year, loss of jobs, reduced wages, overcrowded schools, jails, hospitals, roads and neighborhoods not to mention the added crime. We don't need illegals to pick crops either as there are unlimited visas for legal, foreigner workers for that job.
OldGlory and I actually agree that there should be virtually no illegal aliens in the US. They should be quickly removed as they arrive or become illegal by overstaying a visa.
There should be no way anyone gets past a year of illegality in the US.
Where we do not agree however is how to get to such a state. The existing illegal population is simply too large and too well embedded to be removed. There simply is no practical way to do it. So we need to reduce the population to a manageable number by legalization. But at that point we need systems and capability in place to hold the population below a reasonable limit.
ASt that point we can hold a dialog about how to regulate legal immigration. The present system? A point system like Canada and others? Strong limits modifications to H1B? kl
But first we need control.
