I used to frequently get letters from SSA in my mailbox addressed to people I never met, always w/ Hispanic surnames. Obviously someone chose my address at random to attach to their social security number.

I always wondered why there is no concern over the fact that these people are getting ripped off if they have jobs. They are getting 15.3% taken out of every paycheck (according to the CBO, the 'employer's share' of SS is a legal fiction--the money all comes out of the employee's pockets).

If they are using a false social security number, presumably they will never be able to collect.

This is one way where the undocumented are feeding the system....many estimates say the "cost" of undocumenteds is really a wash. They pay into tax programs and SSA and never claim refunds or benefits. The far right will never admit this.

They're paying into SS with no prospects of ever getting any of it back.

wouldn't having a legal SSN normally make someone a legal immigrant?

seems common sense that an illegal alien would have an illegal SSN by default

Long ago a BF of my daughter worked in an eatery in NYC and I saw that he had a fake SS card. They were easy to make at home.

You have to keep in mind that most all business owners (in certain industries) WANT to hire illegals (cheap, hard working, totally controllable) workers so if a card can be produced, it doesn't matter if it is clearly a fake.

Just as it has been for decades, the "illegal" immigrant problem could be solved in an instant by throwing a couple dozen employers (some big, some small, some in construction, some in meatpacking, some in hospitality)....and broadcasting it all via the media.

But the above posts are correct - these people ARE funding both SS and Medicare for us and the future. I give them my thanks for that.

When it comes down to it, policing the world is not my job. I ran a number of business and never used "illegals" - probably because these were mostly operations that required good English speakers and certain capabilities...and none ever applied.

At the same time, when I hired a local dude (totally legal citizen or green card holder) to do work around the house, I never "carded" the guys who he brought to do the really hard work.

Heck, Mitt Romney had illegals mowing his lawn in MA.

Until Congress decides to do comprehensive immigration reform, nothing will change. Hey, maybe they like getting the extra $$$ in the SS and Medicare funds? Some of these workers probably pay state and fed estimated too...out of their paychecks!

A guy named Jose with my last name comes up living at my old address in NJ. You bet they use our names and addresses and fake SS numbers. I was also told in NJ by the Department of Motor Vehicles someone was using my license.

Where my wife used to work several Filapinos became the victims of SS number theft. Of course these employees had Hispanic surnames as many of them do. When they filed their taxes a letter came back from the IRS stating that they failed to report their unemployment benefits as income. Well they never were unemployed it was some illegals with Hispanic surnames that filed for those benefits under the Filapino's SS numbers. The truth came out eventually but it held up these employee's refund checks for months. Who knows what else these SS numbers were used for.
