This is a great read. Take the time to read it and you will see.

FORUM: Legal versus illegal, a vast gulf : North County Times - Californian (http://www.nctimes.com/articles/2008/07/06/opinion/commentary/z180b6a0599b6fdd28825747a005396f0.txt - broken link)

Default From the article you posted

Quote:
Illegal aliens obviously forgo these requirements, and the evidence is apparent all around us. For example, Sheriff Bill Kolender wrote in an Aug. 14, 2006, report that 25 percent to 40 percent of local gangs are comprised of illegal immigrants. In North County, nearly 80 percent of gang-related crimes involved illegal immigrants, either as suspect or victim
So what is it? Are they immigrants or not?

Btw, as i read through your article i noticed the author stated many good reasons for bringing these 12 million from the shadows.

Quote:
Legal immigrants must be healthy and harbor no infectious diseases. They must be vaccinated against dangerous and contagious diseases including mumps, measles, rubella, polio, tetanus, diphtheria, influenza and hepatitis. They also undergo a rigorous physical exam before entering the country, including screening for highly infectious tuberculosis.

By default, we grant health passes to illegal aliens
Wouldn't it make sense to establish a program so that they be checked?

Quote:
Criminals are prohibited from becoming legal immigrants. Legal immigrants must produce clean and official criminal and military service records, birth certificates, marriage and divorce records.

Isn't that what the so called Immigration bill by John McCain called for last year? That those with criminal records be detained and deported?

Certainly is, i found this one interesting

Spencer doesn't seem to know that about half of those illegally in the country came here legally and overstayed their visas. This means they underwent the criminal, health and other background checks. He tries to scare parents about TB, but cites no statistics or studies to back up his ominous inference. Strangely he says that those without documents are more involved in gang crimes "either as suspects or victims". But studies based on the 2000 census show that immigrants with and without documents were incarcerated in jails and prisons at about 1/3 the rate of native-born citizens. He notes that legal immigrants must show financial self-sufficiency, but ignores the temporary visa programs for poor workers, and the economy's need for millions more, which draws impoverished people here like a magnet. Lastly, he acts like they use resources but do not contribute to the economy. But most economic studies show that they pay taxes, spend, and contribute far more than they take out. We owe our privileged way of life to these poor workers who aren't allowed to enter or stay legally. Our immigration laws do not conform to economic realities
I am not sure if this comment was copyrighted or not.

Yeah BK, you really had to dig to find that one, considering that 95% of the comments were in support of the article. I did notice one thing though, I don't see any sources to buttress this commenters statements, either.

What?! You really expect the pro-illegal crowd to back up their statements? How funny.

I wish those 12 million (more like 20-30) would "come out of the shadows" and get on buses and go home. THAT would be great.

The one thing -- the gulf isn't so vast when you look at the amnestied of the 1980s who use a whole lot of social services, never bothered to learn English and never will, who came here illegally and were rewarded with legalization for having broken the laws and ever since have been using chain migration to bring in all kinds of family members who want their "better life" with Medicaid and food stamps and so on here.

Legal immigrants who make the effort to find an employer, learn something of our history and government and the language are certainly a different kind than those who believe they should be rewarded for breaking the laws.
