I think it is too late because our government just keeps making it easier for them to stay.
Neither Bush nor Obama has done anything to make it harder for them here in the US; if anything rules have become more relaxed. Even e-verify got yanked from the stimulus bill..makes you wonder.

i agree with most of your post, although i disagree with importing more foods. agriculture could employ many americans if we just have legal enforcement in the industry. the government just needs to do its job and enforce the laws that are already on the books!

i agree that if you take away the incentives to be here, they will go home. there is already increased opportunity for jobs in mexico since china is outsourcing their labor costs as they rise as a power. (isn't that ironic?)

as illegal immigrants go home, jobs will open up and the cost burden of supplying benefits to the jobless will decrease. we have people in their 3rd tier of unemployment in this country already, and unemployment insurance is buckling under the pressure.

First off: unless counting their US born Anchor Babies; we do not have 20 million illegal aliens in the USA. The real number of actual illegals is ca. 7-10 million---------down from 12 mil a couple of years ago.

E-Verify will root out most of the remainder-----------if Arizona (my state) is any indication. We have 'lost' about 30-50% of those insolent losers since 2007.

Life is becoming more and more harsh for 'em---------even California is starting to turn against illegal aliens.

It isn't too late if all steps are taken to remove them such as e-verify. The problem is our federal government is not willing to take that necessary step across the board. The ones that will be more difficult to remove are those with U.S. born children. They can live off the welfare of those kids till they are 18 yeards old and then those kids can sponsor them for citizenship.

The birthright citizenship clause needs to be re-interpreted so that at least one parents has to be a citizen in order for their U.S. born child to qualify for that. That will discourage anymore of them already here to give birth on our soil for such purpose.

These two things will also discourage anymore from entering. There are other things that can be done to greatly decrease the flow from continuing to come here but the question was "what can be done with those already here" so I am addressing that mostly.

Our federal government lacks the will to implement e-verify and to re-interpret the birthright citizenship clause so that leaves the burden on the states to use what measures they can to rid their states of illegal aliens. Many states are starting to use such measures. As more and more states do this I think we will see fewer illegal aliens staying here.

It isn’t too late IF we don’t grant amnesty, and IF we enforce ALL laws. However, if illegals are amnestied, it WILL be too late to save our country. If you think they feel emboldened now, wait until their status is changed, and they are no longer deportable. Then, we will truly see a phenomenal level of arrogance, entitlement, and wanton disrespect. Remember, their culture vastly differs from ours. They don’t believe they should show gratitude for the generosity of this country. If granted amnesty, they will simply believe (and rightly so) that they have succeeded in screwing the gringos.

The amnestied illegals who are unable to find work, will simply go on welfare, and have the U.S. taxpayers support them AND their extended families. Remember, there’s a rather extensive list of “exempt” illegals who are not required, nor will they be expected, to be “contributing” members of society. Actually, they will have more rights than citizens.

Now, we have a de facto two-tiered system of laws. With amnesty, we would have a federally mandated two-tiered system. After all, they will be absolved of ALL non-violent crimes, including ID theft, fraud, and tax evasion -- to hell with their victims. They will also become a “protected” class, and any semblance of discrimination will be punished. That’s a HUGE reward for lawbreakers, and a HUGE slap in the face for law-abiding citizens.

Employers will continue to enjoy their cheap labor from the “new” illegals who will flock to this country. After all, our borders will remain open, and E-Verify will continue to be voluntary. There will be few exhaustive background checks, which will allow countless murderers, rapists, pedophiles, etc. to gain legal status. Our immigration laws will continue to be ignored by our government, with the exception of those benefiting the newly amnestied illegals. They will not learn English or attempt to assimilate; and there will be so many loopholes and “exemptions” that few will even pay the measly $500 fine.

In essence, we will be â€adopting’ millions of uneducated and unskilled foreigners; including, 10% of Mexico’s rejected underclass; while thousands continue to enter our country illegally on a daily basis. It will most assuredly be a recipe for a nightmare of historic proportion.

True but why is it not in play with all employment ?
Why do workers get jobs and stay in them using phoney SS cards that supposedly are verified ?

A $500 fine is peanuts compared to having to hire citizens.
Paying under the table is worth the risk to many employers as the penalty is nothing more than a slap on the wrist.

That is the reality today.
