The apparent reluctance on the part of the Federal government to enforce the laws pertaining to illegal immigrants / undocumented aliens begs the question: why?
As many pundits and comics have reminded us - "Where are your papers-s-s-s-s..." is an unpleasant reminder of NAZI Germany. And internal passports of the former Soviet Union are another bad memory of totalitarian police states.
However, the total impotence of the Federal government to police the problem has led border states, like Arizona, to enact laws that can only be enforced by the production of official documents.
Since the laws that grant / deny privileges based upon status of legal immigration come from the Federal government, one must look to them for answers.
Why did the Federal government turn a blind eye to illegals flooding into the nation? For decades, the undocumented folks have been encouraged by employers seeking to hire labor without socialist overhead. Apartment owners have profited by their rental payments - absent the usual security checks that "legal" Americans go through. Whole neighborhoods and apartment complexes transformed into criminal havens, without any backlash from government.
I believe that there is another agenda behind the lack of enforcement of the laws already on the books.
Only by allowing the "illegal" population to swell, could they persuade Americans to demand a "solution" - unpleasant as it may be. The call for "Immigration Reform" is a Trojan Horse. The "real goal" is to get the public clamoring for a national ID document, a national database, and a willingness to "Show our papers-s-s-s".
However, there's no guarantee that once implemented, that the government would crack down on the border busters any more than they are now. As in the past, the promise of "Reform" is but a sham to allow the guilty to benefit, the innocent to suffer, and the rich and powerful to profit at our expense.
Dude we need to do something about the illegal thing ASAP!

People of Mexican origin are NOT the problem. People who are here illegally whether they are from Mexico or Mars...they are the problem. I also believe we had this problem before Obama ever appeared on the national scene.

Sorry, I've got to go with occams razor on this one. Issues being a mile high to solve all these years, something that had too many upsides became dead last priority. Conspiracy? Never underestimate the seductive power of laziness. You can blame every politician since Reagan to present tense. Having an underground class of people keeping wages down for middle class and prices down for bottom 5% came at a terrible other price for all.

There is also an influx of Asian's entering the country illegally, there are more of them than Hispanics so what is the difference?
Europeans and Canadians cross the border illegally on a regular basis also.
The only people who are here legally are Native Americans and Black people.
