Hannah is only three. Yesterday she tasted her first lollipop last Friday. Hannah and her parents were brought to Illinois from South Korea a month months ago.

With an artificial windpipe made of plastic fibers bathed in Hannah’s own living cells, surgeons, on April 9th, at Children’s Hospital of Illinois at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center (Peoria), successfully performed the first bio-engineered transplant in the world on a toddler. It also was the first stem cell therapy at the Peoria hospital.

Yet they could not find a child in America who needed the same surgery?

Perhaps you could tell us the name of this American child who was born without a windpipe and lived long enough to have the surgery - when it was not available anywhere in the world - prior to April 9, 2013? Perhaps you can also tell us how common it is to be born without a windpipe?

It is very good news. It puts Illinois in the world spotlight.

From everything we hear Hannah can lead a normal life. Hurrah for research and medicine! This was not available last month. Seventy years ago space flight was in comic books, and heart surgery was a dream. Between the Jump Center, research in Peoria, and the newly evolving procedures at OSF, the students that graduate from the Peoria medical school will have new skills. Hopefully some of the brightest new doctors will chose to stay in central Illinois for a few years. We really do have some good doctors in our state. One of the oldest is pushing 90. He still practices and still charges $10 for an office call.
