How do I negotiate a salary with my boss before a possible "not promised" promotion. Im barely keeping my head above water with what I make and to make it more nerve racking, I am being told there might be a promotion a month after we are supposed to negotiate salaries/evaluations. If I keep my position without a promotion how can I ask for more money without sounding desperate. This is a make or break situation if I I should find another job.

are you already doing the work of the promotion you will receive? if so, maybe ask your boss if you can attain the salary of that position and make the title change official in a month.

any other scenario depends on how comfortable you feel with how your boss and asking for something. you have to go in there and tell them why you need a raise and because to keep your head afloat isn't going to cut it, tell him/her why you deserve it from a working POV

Asking for a raise isn't desparate, though it sounds like your situation might be anyway. Most 'bosses' consider a raise based upon your quality of work as compared to your peers. You need to know where your quality of work stands in relation to them, or else, a raise probably won't get granted.

It's a two-way street. They should be concerned about losing you as much as you would be concerned not being able to stay there with insufficient pay. Just remember that it doesn't matter to your boss is your job doesn't pay enough for your living expenses. All that matters to your boss is whether your job pays an equitable salary for the postion and quality of work that you provide.

You should probably ask in the Work and Employment forum.
