They already have jobs as this is a transfer. They are from Central Illinois, so are familiar with this area but not so much with Southern IL.

Personally I would avoid Murphysboro. Rents are very cheap there but there are lots of areas are run down. I've been in Carbondale most of the past 8.5 years, moved here for grad school and stuck around. My husband has been here since he moved for undergrad back in 97 and he agrees with not living in Murphysboro. I'd look on the West side of Carbondale near Turley Park, the Arbor District or east of Carbondale in Carterville if we were looking for a place to rent. Do they have children to consider? If so that changes where to look for a rental. I would avoid renting in Carbondale, unless it's in the Unity Point (South of Pleasant Hill Rd) or Giant City school districts

Amy is spot on about Murphysboro...methhead town,lots of sneak thieves and wannabe thugs there..not a bright spot in that town that I can think of...Carterville area is to expensive for what you get...Marion is cheapest,but traffic makes it not worth it..south of Carbondale it gets cheaper and the drive is not so bad and the people are easy going...good luck.
